Society for Rural, Urban & Tribal Initiative (SRUTI)   Address
Tentative Rehabilitation Plan For Gujarat Earthquake Victims

Gujarat Earthquake
Appeal For Supporting Relief And Rehabilitation Work In Villages Of Gujarat

7th February, 2001

Dear Friends,

SRUTI - Society for Rural, Urban & Tribal Initiative, was established in 1983. Founded, among others, by the late Mrs. Tara Ali Baig, Mrs. Ela Bhatt, Mr. Bunker Roy & Dr. Samir Chaudhuri, SRUTI has supported a range of community development initiatives in rural & urban areas throughout India. These have ranged from forest protection to provision of health services; from non-formal education to restoring mortgaged land; from fighting corruption to ensuring fair rehabilitation of those displaced by dams & other development projects. Behind these pathbreaking activities is a network of committed young people (called Fellows) supported by SRUTI, who have found their mission in helping the underprivileged.

In line with our past experience in relief and rehabilitation work during the Uttarakhand Earthquake (1992) and Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), SRUTI in collaboration with our associate groups in Gujarat intends to undertake rehabilitation work in the earthquake hit villages of Gujarat.

The present situation demands that all of us chip in to help the victims of this earthquake. Though support is pouring in from all over the country, the destruction is so huge that continuous support and assistance will be required for a longer period of time to assist the people in rebuilding their lives.

In the case of Orissa cyclone, SRUTI undertook rehabilitation work for the poorest of families through Food for Work programme and was able to restore livelihood and shelter to more than 4000 families in the two cyclone affected districts of Orissa. About Rs 75 lakhs were mobilized for the rehabilitation work. This was made possible through generous donations from people and institutions like you.

We appeal to you to generously support the earthquake rehabilitation work in Gujarat. SRUTI is registered under section 80G and all donations are eligible for 100% tax exemption as announced by the government today.

Please make out cheques\D.D to "SRUTI" and send them to
